Our organs and our cells are comprised of water — in fact, up to 60% of our bodies is made from water alone!  Yet as a society, we continue to forget the healing benefits of water and consistently choose soft drinks, coffee, flavored water and energy drinks as water substitutes.  Water — and not Vitamin water or sparkling soda, but real, pure water is your best friend on your journey to repairing your mental and physical health and increasing your vitality.

Why Water is Vital to Your Overall Health

Imagine a dam in a river that’s been closed off.  Suddenly, the river’s flow begins to weaken, and everything that’s a part of the river’s ecosystem begins to fall apart.  Fish and small mammals can no longer absorb the nutrients they need from the water.  Waste from the river has nowhere to go, so its population dies off.  When the water disappears, so does the vitality of the environment.  The human body operates similarly: without water to usher nutrients and proteins throughout the body, the body’s organs begin to shut down.  Even the food we absorb can’t be properly digested without water to act as a lubricant.  Without water, our body also has no way to expel toxins or pollutants, which increases our chances of acquiring serious ailments from constipation to cancer.  The body’s ‘ecosystem’ perishes.

There’s one organ in your body that needs water the most: your brain!  The brain is 75% water.  Without proper water intake, the clarity of your thinking will decrease and you may be in a perpetual state of fatigue without knowing why.  The best way to preserve your brain health and boost its performance is not just to use it, but to nurture it and care for it.  Your brain never stops running, and it requires constant fuel.  So, before you reach for that cup of coffee in the morning, start your daily routine off on the right foot by showing some love to your gray matter and having an 8 ounce glass of water.

Water Not Only Nourishes Us – it Also Heals the Soul

Water has always been emphasized for its nutritional value, but its other healing benefits shouldn’t be overlooked.  Even observing the ocean or a flowing stream of water can soothe the troubled mind.  Perhaps one of the reasons we feel so comfortable in the water and listening to the sounds of rushing water is because it mimics the fetal state.  From conception, we develop while floating in the embryonic fluids of our mother’s womb.  Floating on the surface of a warm bath or pool can draw us into a state of total comfort and relaxation as we subconsciously return to feeling completely nurtured and protected, just like we did before birth.  When we surrender our need to be physically grounded and allow the water to hold us, we also lose our need for rigid self-control and total self-reliance.  One of the best ways to mentally unwind and relieve stress is to go for a swim, then float on your back and do some simple deep breathing.

Salt water is also a wonderful natural alternative to traditional anti-inflammatory agents.  Gargling with salt water helps strip away excess mucus and bacteria lingering at the back of the throat and in the tonsils to either prevent or treat a cold and a bad sore throat.  Bathing in warm salt water or swimming in the sea can help dry up acne, scab over minor open wounds and encourage the drainage of harmful toxins from the lymph nodes.

Listening to water during meditation and visualizing water are two excellent ways to help reduce stress after a long, difficult day.  The body, when held in a constant state of tension for long periods of time, has been proven to suffer — scientists have found a link between consistently high stress levels and an increased chance of getting heart disease, cancer, anxiety disorders and other serious conditions.  The following exercise will help you take advantage of the healing power of water to reduce your stress levels and stay well.

Step 1:  Begin by taking some deep breaths.  Continue to breathe until you quiet your thoughts and feel relaxed.

Step 2:  Start to envision any kind of water: an ocean, a stream, a brook, even the rain.  Construct this visual in your mind, then try to picture what the water sounds like.  Focus solely on the images and sounds running through your mind.  How does the sight and sound of the water make you feel?

Step 3:  Now, picture immersing yourself in the water.  Whether it’s allowing the rain to glide over your skin, or diving head-first into a beautiful, warm pool, visualize your anxiety, fear, anger and stress melting away as soon as the water touches your body.

Step 4:  Close the exercise with a few deep breaths, and exit the meditation feeling cleansed and revitalized.

If your relationship fizzles out unexpectedly, you may feel emotionally violated knowing your ex-lover has seen the depths of your heart when they didn’t deserve to. You also pose the risk of emotionally alienating your partner by getting too heavy too fast. Instead, focus on creating a balanced stream of communication, with equal give and take.

Avoid creating unrealistic expectations: When you feel you’re merging with someone on a soul level, it’s easy to accidentally create unrealistic expectations. Telling your partner after just a few months of dating that you sense you’ll be together always may seem like a harmless statement that expresses the depths of your love. But, by indulging in this thinking, you risk losing touch with reality. Empaths often suffer from a fear of losing those they love. However, making statements like ‘I’ll never leave you’ or ‘I just can’t live without you’ in order to create an indestructible attachment just does more harm than good. Although it’s sweet to be romantic, you don’t want to set yourself up for a co-dependent, anxious relationship.

Acknowledge your lover’s faults: Because you’re so compassionate, it’s easy to overlook your partner’s faults. Forgiving annoying quirks can be helpful, but sweeping more serious issues under the rug will set you up for unhappiness and heartbreak. To say that we’re our own worst enemy is an understatement. As an astrologer that focuses specifically on healing wounds from the past by decoding the karma of the stars, I’ve seen how most of us rarely catch a glimpse of how much we undermine ourselves in everyday life. Observing the 12th house of hidden self-sabotage in the natal chart, I’ve easily been able to see how my clients have accidentally shot themselves in the foot – even though they were usually unaware of this until I pointed it out to them! But it doesn’t take an astrologer’s touch to figure out where you’re undermining your own goals and happiness in daily life. By increasing your self-awareness and positive self-talk, you can avoid harmful patterns of behavior that only fuel your inner self-saboteur.

Where Does Your “Dark Side” Really Come From?

Self-sabotage is a tricky business. Just when your new job or your relationship seems to be going in an amazing direction, negative self-talk may begin to flood your thoughts. Paranoia about criticism from your co-workers or an old ex reappearing back on the scene just won’t stop plaguing you. It’s utterly maddening! What gives?

The simplest way to stop self-sabotaging behaviors is to look deep within to discover the root of your behaviors. When we begin to question if our wonderful new job is really going to be that amazing, or wonder if our partner really loves us as much as we love them, these self-sabotaging thoughts are a direct reflection of our hidden fears of loss and failure and feelings of unworthiness. By anticipating the worst, we may think we’ll divert a crisis when in reality, we’re creating a harmful self-fulling prophecy. While it’s easy to play into old patterns of negative thinking, remember that the only significant person telling you that you don’t deserve love and happiness is you. What other people told you or how they treated you in the past is irrelevant. You are in control of your will, and your self-image shapes the person who you are, not the judgements of others or past mistakes. When you begin to truly love yourself and realize you are worthy of everything you have, your inner self-saboteur will flee the scene.

Harmful Phrases to Avoid Self-Defeat

Without realizing it, the words we speak and the thoughts we project into the Universe have a much greater effect on our energy than we may realize. We can convince ourselves that we’re worthless and poison all positivity with a brigade of self-loathing thoughts in a matter of minutes! However, there is a way out of this trap: watch the words you speak, and keep your thoughts in check. Here are some ‘red alert’ phrases  to watch out for:

  • “I just feel powerless.” If you believe you’re powerless, how have you come this far? Did someone magically take care of all of your problems for you? Don’t even your most basic achievements, like getting up on time every day, account for your strength? Even if we’re placed in a situation in which we’re at a disadvantage physically, financially or emotionally, we still have the power within to remain grounded. It is only when we lose control of our thoughts, emotions and intentions that we truly become powerless.
  • “I don’t know what I’m doing.” When your life feels like it’s collapsing, it’s tempting to say “I just don’t know what I’m doing” or “I’m not sure what to do.” But by uttering these words, you’re sending out a message not only to yourself but also the Universe that you’re a victim of circumstance and helpless to take control over your life and your choices. This will only make your situation increasingly negative.
  • “My entire life is horrible!” Seeing things strictly in black and white and believing that one negative incident or relationship serves to define your entire existence only serves to draw negativity into your life. If a horrible situation, a failed relationship or getting fired from your job has caused you great suffering, turn this phrase around and address your feelings for what they are: “XYZ has caused me great pain and suffering – life itself has not, and I can turn my life around.”
  • “My feelings got the best of me, I can’t help myself.” Anything along these lines is an immediate red flag that you’re denying responsibility for your emotions. Anger is often the one emotion that can consume us and create devastating consequences in our lives, yet we often feel compelled to blame anger itself instead of taking accountability for our faults! In his book “Be Nobody,” Lama Marut eloquently explains that instead of believing it’s rational to be angry or hateful, express anger toward that afflicted side of yourself that goes into a rage and “…avoid the temptation to give in to the siren song of the afflictions.”

Smudge with Herbs For Optimal Cleansing

Smudging with sage is a classic way to free your home of troublesome energy, and it’s easy to buy for cheap. Sage is the perfect tool to use during times of crisis in your household. You can also smudge with your own blend of herbs by using an incense burner with a charcoal disk or a dish filled with sand. I recommend blending sandalwood, mistletoe, lavender and sage. Sandalwood generates loving energies; mistletoe increases your resolve to banish negativity; and lavender purifies toxic influences in your environment. Here is a smudging exercise to bless your home:

  1. Prepare your sage or blend of herbs. Take caution to ensure that your materials are in a safe location when burning.
    • You may want to meditate beforehand to prepare yourself for the exercise.
  2. As you light your sage or herbs, picture the rising smoke as a magnet for negativity. Visualize the smoke drawing in a visible darkness and clearing the way for beams of light. Begin in your room, then work your way downstairs.

    • It may help to use mantras while smudging. ‘I banish negativity from my home’ is one mantra that may work.
  3. Finish the exercise at the back door of your home. Open the door and visualize the negative energy in your home exiting out the door.
  4. Block this negative energy from reentering your home by hanging a protective amulet, such as the Hamsa, Evil Eye or a purifying stone (i.e., Clear Crystal Quartz) at the front and back doors.

Ward Off Negativity with Joyful Speech

When family members are frequently depressed, angry and unable to help themselves, don’t get caught up in their negativity –  try chanting a compassionate prayer or mantra to bring light into your loved one’s life. The positive energy released during this recitation will act as a healing influence on your home and as psychic protection from a loved one’s negative emotions.

Using Stones for Purification and Grounding

  • Clear crystal quartz is one of the best stones to use to eliminate negative energy from your home. This stone’s high vibrations free  trapped energy that needs to be released – it’s particularly helpful when you have suffered the loss of a loved one or if you or a family member have chronic illness. Place shards of the stone in the corners of each room in your home.
